When connecting a robot system to a PC or industrial network (via Ethernet, WiFi or other interfaces) common IT security precautions should be considered.

If you got no specific guidelines consider the following:

  • Check IT security laws and standards that apply to you.
  • Limit the network to the least required components.
    • Do not connect the robot control to the internet. In no case should it be accessible from the internet.
    • Avoid connecting the robot control to your company network or industrial systems that it does not need to communicate with.
    • If no communication to other systems is necessary only use the network connection for configuration and programming by a directly connected PC (via a single Ethernet cable)
    • If connections to a company network is necessary consider using firewalls and other security mechanisms to protect and limit in- and outgoing access
  • Protect access to the robot control's networks
    • Make sure no unauthorized persons can connect to the robot control's Ethernet port or connected network
    • If using the WiFi interface use a strong password and do not share it with unauthorized persons
    • Use strong login passwords to PCs and other devices connected to the robot control's network and do not share them with unauthorized persons
